Adding a historic horse and carriage tour to your Charleston itinerary has long been a must-do for most Lowcountry travelers. There is no better way to experience the various boroughs of Charleston than on a relaxing carriage ride, letting your experienced tour guide take you on a trip back in time. Palmetto Carriage Works has been offering daytime tours since 1972, making it the oldest horse carriage company in town. They are thrilled to officially announce the return of their evening Haunted History horse and carriage tour, which will run each evening from 5:30PM – 7PM. Learn more about these tours here.
For the traveler who loves history, but doesn’t appreciate Charleston’s summertime heat and humidity, this carriage tour is for you. The tour explores the historic streets of Charleston, and shares many similarities with the daytime hour-long tour. The main differences are the content: this particular tour dives into the sinister side of Charleston’s history, exploring some of the alleged hauntings that have led to mysterious circumstances; the duration: this tour runs for 45 minutes; and the route: visitors will see sights such as the Old Exchange Building & Provost Dungeon, the famed Circular Church graveyard, and some popular restaurants which have long been associated with some of Charleston’s haunted history.
This horse and carriage tour is offered in both public and private formats, allowing the guest to choose what option makes the most sense for them. Public carriage tours are an excellent way to see the city and to meet fellow travelers along the way. Private carriage tours are a great option for those who would like a more intimate experience, and who may like to tailor their experience to their particular interests. Both public and private carriage tour guides have a wealth of knowledge about Charleston’s rich history and would be happy to answer any guest questions as they arise throughout the tour.
Traveling with children? Palmetto Carriage Works is a kid friendly tour company, and we can attest to the fact that even young children enjoy our Haunted History tour. If it’s not enough that they will have the opportunity to ride with one of our lovable horses, they will also be entertained by the various haunted stories told by our tour guides. Because the horse and carriage tour is history-focused, the stories are not overtly scary, and we’ve found that kids often enjoy the content just as much as adults.
As you begin making your summer plans in Charleston, consider an evening carriage tour of the Holy City.
